Scholarship Application ** DEADLINE September 30, 2010 Download application form here. The New Westminster & District Labour Council (NWDLC) is now accepting applications for two (2) scholarships in memory of Brothers Gerry Stoney and Bob Fortin for the 2012 CLC Harrison Winter School Program. Criteria: • You must be an active delegate or alternate delegate of the NWDLC. • You must submit a letter on the back of Application Form, before September 30, 2011, describing your interest in labour education and how the opportunity to attend the CLC Winter School program will contribute to your personal development, benefit your union and the Labour Council. • Attach a separate list of any union or other related educational course you have taken. • The application must be signed by a ranking Officer of your local union. • Applications will only be accepted from delegates or alternate delegates who have not attended the CLC Winter School for a minimum of two (2) years immediately prior to the year in which the scholarship applies. • The scholarship(s) pays the cost of registration at the rate for shared accomodation as set out by the Canadian Labour Congress, Pacific Region; lost wages to a maximum of $1000. • Leave of absence arrangements and wage costs are the responsibility of the applicant and/or the applicant's union. About The Gerry Stoney Scholarship was first awarded in January, 1989, the year that Brother Stoney stepped down after serving for 18 years as the President of the New Westminster & District Labour Council. Gerry believed passionately in the role that the Canadian Labour Congress and Labour Councils play in bringing unions together for political action, education and strike support. Brother Stoney was President of the New Westminster Local of IWA-Canada, and went on to serve as its National President before his retirement. He spent his life committed to improving the quality of life for working people. Brother Stoney passed away in May, 1999 at the age of 57. The Bob Fortin Scholarship was first presented at the 2001 CLC Winter School. Brother Fortin represented the United Steelworkers for over seven years on the Labour Council Executive Board and was a regular instructor at our schools. His generous contribution of time and energy benefitted his members, the Labour Council and the Canadian Labour Congress. He valued every opportunity to share his skills and experience in the classroom, and regularly taught CLC/Labour Council weekend schools around the province. Bob's warmth, sense of humour and dedication to the trade union movement gained him the respect of all who had the benefit of knowing him. Bob passed away in June, 1999 at the age of 49. |
