Burnaby, BC – The New Westminster & District Labour Council have reviewed the results of the November 15th municipal elections that took place on the weekend and are pleased to report that 77% of their endorsed candidates were successfully elected as Mayors, Councillors and School Trustees.
“Although we still have a long way to go, it was great to see the increase in voter participation pretty much across the board in our municipalities for this weekend’s elections,” says Council Secretary-Treasurer Sister Carolyn Rice. “And we are very pleased that a high percentage of the candidates we interviewed and who were endorsed by our Labour Council delegates were successful in being elected.”
Rice credits the hard work of the candidates and the countless hours of support of the campaign volunteers who recognize that political activism is a priority at all levels of government when it comes to participating in their communities. Local government plays many important roles that have a direct impact on the day-to-day lives of Canadians. Working together to support candidates who understand the issues that affect working people and their families at the municipal level is one way to ensure the door to effective communication is open and public involvement in local government decision-making is at the forefront.
“Our Council’s work with our candidate interviews and recommendations for endorsement reflect our members’ desire to be engaged,” says Rice. “We are encouraged that so many candidates seek an endorsement from our Labour Council and that our members also have that additional opportunity to enhance their responsibility as citizens in helping shape the type of communities they want to live in.”
“Our endorsement process doesn’t end with these elections,” she says. “We are committed to following up with our endorsed candidates by attending Council and School Board meetings in our local communities and being engaged with the ongoing issues.”
