International Women’s Day

March 8 is International Women’s Day — a day to recognize women’s achievements and acknowledge the challenges they continue to face in the quest for gender equality.

Day of Mourning

Every year on April 28 we pay our respects to, and remember, the thousands of workers who have been killed, injured or suffered illness as a result of work-related incidents.  We also honour the many families and friends who have been deeply affected by these tragedies.

Every worker has the right to return home safe and sound at the end of each work day.  By working together – with employers, workers and our health and safety partners – we can prevent worker injuries and deaths before they occur.

Remembrance Days

November 8 is Indigenous Veterans Day in Canada. This day was set aside in 1994 in recognition of Indigenous contributions to military service. The Secretary-Treasurer and members of the Indigenous Standing Committee attend the annual service in Vancouver’s Victory Square to lay a wreath on behalf of the New Westminster & District Labour Council.

On November 11, delegates lay wreaths on behalf of the Labour Council at services in their community remembering the sacrifice and service of members of the armed forces.

In 2023 the NWDLC was privileged to send 17 delegates to 12 of the 13 Royal Canadian Legions in our region to pay our respects to the fallen by laying a wreath.

United Way of  British Columbia Labour Appreciation Night

On Thursday, November 30 from 5:30 – 9 pm the NWDLC will honour an individual with the Labour Community Service Award. The award recognizes outstanding Labour activism and community service at this United Way event.

The New Westminster & District Labour Council has selected Candace Knoll as our 2023 recipient of the Labour Community Service Award.

Candace Knoll was born and raised in Winnipeg and made the move west to the Lower Mainland as a youth. She is recently retired from a career with TELUS which started in the 90s, and thanks to that disrespectful manager, she was motivated to get involved with her union. She was her Unit President with the Telecommunications Workers’ Union (now known as USW Local 1944) and a bargaining committee member.  Even in retirement, she is not far from the industry as she volunteers as a board member of the BC Association of Retired Telecommunications Workers.

Her passion is for social justice and Candace has been dedicated to uplifting women, youth, and the Black community.  With her family by her side, husband Jeff and son Jesse, her niece Teryl Brown, and her hero and mother, Estelle Brown, Candace creates opportunities to have a diverse representation as only equity and inclusion will create a bright future for us all. She is a regular volunteer for United Ways Period Promise Campaign, the Miss BC Pageant, and serves the community as a director on the Hogan’s Alley Society and is the Founder and President of the Jr Black Achievement Awards Society. In 2023, the Jr Black Achievement Awards Society Awards Ceremony was held in Port Moody showcasing the accomplishments of the community.
